AUTOSAR (AUTomotive Open System ARchitecture) is a consortium founded in 2003 with the goal of "standardizing" essential to advance the reuse of automotive software and automation of the development process across the automotive industry.
Almost all automobile-related companies are now participating in AUTOSAR. AUTOSAR has already been adopted in almost all new development projects in Europe, and is expected to be increasingly used in development projects in Japan. A standard originally defined as a standard based on the static OS (OSEK/VDX OS) was defined as Classic Platform later, and the Adaptive Platform based on the dynamic OS (POSIX based) was introduced in 2017.
At the same time, the Foundation was established for common technical specifications for the Classic Platform and Adaptive Platform, including common requirements, methodologies, and protocols.

The introduction of AUTOSAR makes hardware and application software more independent and easier to standardize. It can be separated into horizontal layers through abstraction, reducing development time, cost, and efficiency as shown in the following example.

Future vehicles will require advanced autonomous driving, Car2X and V2X applications, IoT and cloud services, increased data volume, and high reliability.
